Bullmastiff History                The bullmastiff breed originated in England in circa 1860. Bred to guard large estates they were referred to as the "Games Keeper Dog" or " The Night Dog" The breed constructed using the crossing of 60% mastiff and 40% Bulldog. A the nature of this combination was to create a breed that would be Fearless, strong silent, powerful enough and agile enough to chase and knock a poacher to the ground, without mauling. Temper and ability to accept training were also key in the final combination. Land owners wanted loyal , trustworthy dogs that while not working would easily fit into the family and not be aggressive .There were many different combinations tried and rejected before the Bullmastiff was recognized by the E.K.C ( English Kennel Club) in 1924. After being imported to the United States and having guarded the estates of the likes of the John D. Rockefeller a dedicated group pushed for the acceptance of the pure bred Bullmastiff and won the acceptance of the AKC ( American Kennel Club) circa 1933. The first championed Bullmastiff was Tiger Prince. The breed was intended to be Brindle to make them invisible to intruders at night. The secondary colors being the lesser desired it was only once in America that "favorable " or popular colors of fawn and reds began to be dominate the look of the bullmastiff. Although bullmastiff carry the "masking gene" which gives the appearance of the dark muzzle, you cannot have a brindle produced unless there is a Brindle in the Pairing.
